Meteor shower named Perseids will reach its peak during the night of August 11 and 12, and the best time to observe Perseids is in the early morning hours.

If you can’t personally seek out Perseids, watch these two free live streams led by astrophysicist Gianluca Masi from the Virtual Telescope Project.

The live streams will use a project camera for the entire sky, giving you a front-row view of the dark sky above Maciano in Italy, of course if weather conditions allow.
Both live streams will start at 9:00 p.m., as they coincide with the expected meteor shower activity.
„This year, the sky will offer perfect conditions (without moonlight interference), so don’t miss the show!“ according to the Virtual Telescope Project.
Perseids are an annual meteor shower visible from mid-July to the end of August. They are one of the most prolific meteor showers of the year, providing skywatchers with numerous opportunities to see a shooting star during warmer summer nights.
The meteor shower is caused by the remnants of the Swift-Tuttle comet, the largest object known to regularly pass by Earth. It last passed by our planet in 1992 and will not return until 2126. As Earth passes through the comet’s debris, rock and ice fragments enter Earth’s atmosphere at speeds of up to 130,000 mph (209,000 km/h), about 85 times faster than the fastest jet fighter. These speeds cause the air in front of the debris to compress and heat up to a thousand degrees. This results in bright streaks of light known as meteors or „shooting stars“.
The meteor shower is named after the constellation from which the meteors appear to radiate. From Earth’s perspective, Perseids appear to come from the direction of the Perseus constellation in the northern hemisphere, as reported by „Space“.
