Gorana Tanasković from the Chamber of Commerce of the Moravica and Raška districts announced today that an initiative has been launched to protect the geographical origin and branding of Čačak apricots, in order to add additional value to the apricots from this region and their products.
She told Tanjug that all relevant institutions have agreed that this should be apricots, a fruit recognized throughout Serbia, because this area where it is produced is specific in terms of microclimate and soil.
She reminds that in the villages in the territory of the city of Čačak, apricots are grown on over 200 hectares, making this city the second largest producer of this fruit in Serbia.
„Here, a specific apricot is produced with a taste and aroma that is recognized throughout Serbia and beyond. In order to better position this apricot, which is produced in the villages of Miokovci, Milićevci, Gornja Gorevnica, Prijevor, Trbušani, Vranići, that sweetness, aroma, and taste need to be recognized and protected by geographical origin,“ Tanasković said.
The holder of this project is the Association „Miokovačka kajsija“, with support from the Institute for Fruit Growing Čačak, Čačak Agronomic Faculty, and the Center for Tradition Preservation.
„By branding and protecting the geographical origin, we believe that apricots from this area will be better positioned in the market, achieve better prices and better sales. With stronger marketing, which we need to work on, we will also influence the increase in apricot plantations and ensure that the benefits of apricot production and processing are even greater, and that the products find their place in the foreign market,“ Tanasković said.
