Diplomat Vladislav Jovanović said today that the meeting of the UN Security Council is not only the best, but the only proper way to put the issue of Kosovo and Metohija back in the center of the United Nations’ attention and to consider it from the perspective of Resolution 1244.

Jovanović explained the procedure for scheduling a UNSC meeting, stating that the chairperson is obliged to submit the request for approval, and then a closed session is held to decide whether the issue goes to the plenary, or the main meeting of the Security Council.

He clarified that in this case, the right to veto does not apply, as it is considered a procedural issue and decided by a simple majority. Nine out of the 15 members need to approve the proposal for a Security Council meeting to be convened and for the proposal to be accepted.

Jovanović further explained that Serbia needs to secure a majority among the non-permanent members, but it is unlikely that the Western members with veto power would allow the proposal to pass.

When asked who Serbia can rely on, Jovanović said there are those who are friendly or neutral towards us and who would be understanding of such a proposal due to the enforcement of the binding UN Security Council Resolution 1244.

He added that Serbia will consult the sentiment among the non-permanent members and if convinced that there will be enough votes, the proposal will be formally submitted.

Regarding the recent actions by Albin Kurti and Pristina, he said their actions are a policy of intimidating the local Serbs and causing their exodus.

He emphasized the importance of bringing the attention of the international community back to the issue of Kosovo and Metohija through Resolution 1244, and not only through the ongoing dialogue, where we are practically isolated, and all other interlocutors are good supporters of Pristina.

He also pointed out that the recent attack on enclaves can be seen as a continuation of Pristina’s policy of applying systematic measures to force the Serbs to flee.

Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić said today Serbia will request the urgent holding of a UN Security Council meeting regarding the situation in Kosovo and Metohija.

„In accordance with Article 35 of the Charter, Article 3 of the Provisional Rules of Procedure, our representative to the UN mission will submit in writing a request for an urgent meeting of the UN Security Council. ‘Guiness’ is the current president of the Security Council. Unfortunately, they have recognized Kosovo, but there is no right of veto, a majority of nine members is needed, so we will see if we can secure a majority,“ said Vučić.

The article talks about the efforts of the Serbian officials at the United Nations Security Council to bring the Kosovo and Metohija issue back into the global spotlight for deliberation and potential action based on Resolution 1244. It discusses the procedures, support options for Serbia, and the recent tensions in the region that warrant international attention.
